Ecstatic Dance

What is Ecstatic Dance?

  • Ecstatic dance is a free-form movement practice where people are invited to move in whatever way feels natural to their body. There are no steps, no choreography, and no expectation to perform. Guided by music, it becomes a space to release, express, connect, and be fully present. It allows the body to process emotions, shift energy, and return to a deeper sense of self.

  • At Manawa, we value authenticity, self-expression, and connection. We are committed to creating a safe, non-judgmental space where people can come as they are. We lead with the manawa, the heart, and believe in kindness, respect, and inclusivity. We honour each person’s unique experience and see self-expression as a powerful form of healing.

  • Our approach is simple and intentional. We create a safe container through clear guidelines: no alcohol, no shoes, no phones, and no talking on the dance floor. This supports presence, embodiment, and deeper connection. We prioritise the flow of the music journey, the safety of the space, and the freedom for each person to explore their inner world through movement, at their own pace.

FAQs

What is an Ecstatic Dance?

1

Ecstatic dance is a free-form movement practice where you can move your body however it feels natural. There are no steps, no choreography, and no right or wrong way to dance. It’s about expressing yourself, releasing energy, and connecting with your body through music.

Do I need any dance experience?

2

Not at all. Manawa is for everyone. Whether you’ve never danced before or you dance all the time, you are welcome exactly as you are.

What are the guidelines and why are they important?

3

We dance with no alcohol, no shoes, no phones, and no talking on the dance floor. These guidelines help create a safe, present, and respectful space where everyone can fully drop into their experience without distraction or judgment.

What should I wear or bring?

4

Wear comfortable clothes you can move freely in. Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated. You’ll be dancing barefoot, so come prepared to move and feel grounded.

What if I feel nervous or unsure?

5

That’s completely normal. Many people feel this way before their first dance. You can take it at your own pace, move gently, or simply sit and observe.

There is no pressure, just being in the space is enough.
